Penticton City Council has approved a plan that would see two residential buildings with a combined 67 units built on the site of a former water slide near Skaha Lake.
A proposed complex with six-storey and four-storey buildings at 235 Yorkton Ave. was given the green light by municipal politicians on May 13.
Located off Skaha Lake Road, the property was zoned as "Hotel Resort" before council approved a variance to allow for the construction of the proposed buildings.
Skaha Lake Towers, a condo development with buildings ranging in height from 12 to 14 storeys, is located behind the proposed development.
The newly approved project is split into two buildings, the first is set to be six-storeys with three commercial units and 55 apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms, with a parking garage/parkade at the rear.
A total of 12 two-bedroom apartment units and a parking garage are part of the neighbouring four-storey building.
There are 89 parking spots included in the plan. Sixty-seven of those are for residents, with the remaining spots designated for visitors and commercial use.
An amenity room, outdoor patio, storage lockers, lawn area, and private balcony spaces for each unit are also featured in the proposal.
City staff say the project's applicant is considering making the complex a stratified condominium development, after initially wanting rental units.
The developer is also contributing $30,000 for design work on Skaha Lake Road, between Yorkton Avenue and Waterford Avenue, to reduce the number of travel lanes for the installation of parking and "active transportation infrastructure."
There will be no public hearing on the project, as the B.C. government in November 2023 passed legislation prohibiting municipalities from holding such gatherings when proposals are aligned with the Official Community Plan.
The property is part of the site of the former Wonderful Waterworld in Skaha, which opened in 1996 and closed about a decade later.
