A new series featuring the Heiltsuk First Nations Coast Guard near Bella Bella called Ocean Warriors: Mission Ready premieres at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 14 on APTN.
Ocean Warriors features four First Nations which have partnered to form Canada’s only Indigenous Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary (CNCGA).
Episodes nine through 13 will feature the Heiltsuk men and women ready to respond to emergencies in their territory along the central coast of British Columbia.
The series was shot in the Ahousaht, Quatsino, Heiltsuk and ‘Namgis Nations. The series takes viewers into the communities as the men and women train to respond to coastal emergencies.
“I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to show viewers the incredible work of the CNCGA search and rescue volunteers,” said Steve Sxwithul’txw (pronounced Swee-thult), the First Nations director and producer in the release announcing the show’s premiere.
“The beauty of these territories and communities cannot be measured and we are so grateful for this opportunity to share it with a broader audience.”
