A warning put in place for parts of the Similkameen Valley earlier this week has been prolonged due to further precipitation in the surrounding region.

The Lower Similameen Indian Band (LSIB) issued a slope monitor warning via the automated Slope Monitoring System (SMS) for the nʔaysnúlaʔxʷ (Ashnola) and c̓up̓áq̓ (Chopaka) areas due to upcoming rainfall on May 11. The warning was to be in effect for two days, but weather forecasting shows more precipitation in the adjacent valleys, catchments and slopes, causing the warning to be extended until 4 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20.

In the Chopaka (East Zone), affected areas and locations of concern include:

  • Snehumption Creek
  • Shoudy Creek
  • Robert Creek
  • Susap Creek
  • Sintlehahten Creek
  • Chopaka Road (North and South)

In the Ashnola (West Zone) areas and locations include:

  • Ashnola Road
  • Ewart Creek Road
  • Crater Creek
  • Webster Creek
  • Ashnola River floodplain
  • Hydrometric stations (Ewart Creek, Ashnola River)
  • Trails and park access near Lakeview and Ewart Creeks

"LSIB will continue to monitor all activity in the areas," LSIB stated. "Should you spot slope movement, get to a safe place away from the area and then call 9-1-1 to report it."

LSIB also reiterated that this is only a warning, not an alert, that slopes may be compromised by incoming weather.
