The upcoming weather forecast has caused a warning to be put in place for parts of the Similkameen Valley.

The Lower Similameen Indian Band (LSIB) issued a slope monitor warning via the automated Slope Monitoring System (SMS) for the nʔaysnúlaʔxʷ (Ashnola) and c̓up̓áq̓ (Chopaka) areas due to upcoming rainfall. The SMS issued the warning to be in effect from Sunday, May 11 at 9 p.m. to Tuesday, May 13 at 4 p.m.

An estimated 5 mm to 15 mm of rain was forecast over the next 48 to 72 hours from the start of the warning, with snow possibly falling at higher mountain elevations.

"At this time, this is only a warning that slopes may be compromised by incoming weather," the LSIB stated. "This is not an alert."

LSIB will continue to monitor all activity in the area and is encouraging the community to be safe and on the look out for any signs of a landslide.

"Should you spot slope movement, get to a safe place away from the area and then call 911 to report it," they stated.
