The midway at the Archie Browning Sports Centre is open and Esquimalt Buccaneer Days is out in full swing for a weekend of pirate-themed fun throughout the township.
Starting on May 8 to Sunday, May 11, the beloved event will feature the midway carnival, two community breakfasts, a Saturday morning parade, a market and a skydiving demonstration on Bullen Field.
On Saturday morning, the front entrance of the Archie Browning Sports Centre will host a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m. before the 10 a.m. start of the parade, which will run along Esquimalt Road from Dominion Road to Admirals Road.
Sunday will feature a Mother's Day breakfast at 9 a.m. at Bullen Field, a tug-of-war competition between the Victoria Police Department, Esquimalt Fire Department, and the Royal Canadian Navy, and the day will end with the skydiving demo at 3 p.m.
In 1939, Esquimalt began holding the May Queen celebration, which eventually evolved into Esquimalt Days. In 1966, it became the pirate-themed Buccaneer Days and has remained so for the past 59 years.
