It didn’t take long for a Mountie on patrol in Chase River to figure out a bike had been stolen when the suspect, who the officer knew had no children, rode by on a bike equipped with a child carrier.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, the officer was patrolling the area early Monday, July 7, in response to a report of a man acting suspiciously in the 1200 block of Junction Ave.

"Shortly after arriving in the area, the officer saw a male matching the caller’s detailed description, ride by on a bicycle that was too big for him, with a child carrier strapped to the bicycle. The officer recognized the male from other police interactions and knew he did not have any children," noted the release.

Upon questioning the rider about the bike, the officer determined the bike had been stolen. The black Schwinn bike was seized and is now at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment. Police have, so far, not been able to identify the owner as it was not reported stolen nor registered with Project Garage 529.

Anyone who recognizes the bike as theirs and would like to reclaim it is asked to bring proof of purchase with a serial number and reference file No. 2025-20912.
