UPDATE: Garage fire 'aggressively' knocked down at Chilliwack townhouse

Black smoke and flames seen venting from garage on Hazel Street when Chilliwack firefighters arrived on scene

A fire broke out in a garage at a townhouse complex in Chilliwack on Wednesday.

Firefighters from multiple halls were called to the scene on Hazel Street around 4:40 p.m. on Nov. 6, between Maple Avenue and Yale Road in Chilliwack.

"The occupant and a bystander both attempted to reduce the growth of the fire," said assistant fire chief Krista Minar in a press release.

En route, the call was upgraded to a two-alarm fire, meaning more crews were needed to help battle the blaze. There were reports the fire was spreading beyond the garage.

When crews arrived, they said that flames and black smoke could be seen venting from the garage.

Firefighters focused on "aggressively" knocking down the blaze and pressurizing neighbouring units to prevent the fire from spreading, Minar added. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage with some damage to the exterior of the building.

RCMP and paramedics were on scene to provide support, and Emergency Support Services was contacted to help the occupants of the impacted unit.

Approximately 35 firefighters from Halls 1, 2, 4, and 6 responded. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or occupants.

"We want to emphasize the critical role interconnected smoke alarms play in protecting your home and loved ones," Minar said. "Having interconnected smoke alarms installed on every level of your home ensures that when one alarm sounds, they all sound, providing an early and unified warning system, giving you precious time to escape."

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story stated the fire spread to the home. The Chilliwack Progress regrets this error and any confusion it may have caused.
