West Kootenay Regional Airport terminal expansion moving forward

The $10-million project will take several years to complete

The terminal at the West Kootenay Regional Airport is getting some major upgrades.

Major upgrades to the terminal building at the West Kootenay Regional Airport in Castlegar are progressing with the hiring of the project's architects.

The current terminal space does not have the capacity to accommodate the passenger volumes of the 78-seat Q400, the main aircraft that flies through WKRA, which can create a significant passenger bottleneck. The terminal also lacks amenities both pre- and post-security.

“These upgrades demonstrate the city’s commitment to creating a modern airport that strengthens connections and supports regional economic growth,” says Mayor Maria McFaddin. “They ensure Castlegar is ready for larger planes, additional flights, and more passengers, while meeting safety requirements and improving the overall travel experience.”

On June 23, Castlegar City Council awarded a $720,000 contract to Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning to lead the design work for the project.

Nine companies submitted proposals, but Kasian was the preferred proponent for a number of reasons including their extensive experience with airport
design, engineered wood and timber construction methods.  The evaluation team also liked that their project leader is based out of Trail, and that they had a strong team of sub-consultants who also have relevant mass timber and airport experience.

The budget for the entire project is currently estimated at $10 million. This includes permits, consulting fees, construction manager fees, construction costs and contingencies. Cost estimates will be refined as the design progresses.

The project will be partially funded by a $6-million grant from the Union of BC Municipalities Growing-Community Fund.

Design work is expected to begin this summer, and construction is anticipated to occur throughout 2027 and into 2028.
