We checked in with Central Coast Regional District chair Jayme Kennedy to see where the Centennial Pool upgrade project is at.

Here are some questions from Monica Lamb-Yorski (MLY) and answers provided by Jayme Kennedy (JK).

MLY: Where is the pool upgrade project at now?

JK: We are delighted to report that work is moving forward on the pool. The architects were recently here and we have some drawings that will very soon be available to the public. We still have some very big decisions to make and look forward to more consultation with the pool committee, the public, contractors, and the architects.

MLY: What happens next?

JK:

Next, we will narrow our scope and decide exactly how we can satisfy the most pool users’ needs, make the pool and change rooms accessible, and ensure staff have good eye lines on pool users at all times.

MLY: Has there been any interest from the public to join the pool advisory committee?

JK: Yes, I am very happy to report that we have had uptake on the pool advisory committee. We did a big mail out and got a great response. We will now have enough members to form the committee. Up until recently, we could not say that. I want to extend my most heartfelt gratitude to those who stepped forward and to those who have championed the cause.

MLY: Is there already one in place and this is a matter of getting new members or is thing something new?

JK: In the past, there was a very active pool commission in place but as these members retired from the commission, it seemed to be harder and harder to recruit the volunteers to fill their shoes.

MLY: What will be expected from people on the committee?

JK: Committee members will advise staff and the board on staffing, scheduling and decision making. Especially with the project finally getting underway, their role will be very important as advisors on the project.

MLY: How much does the pool cost to maintain each year?

This would be an operations question; I am not sure at this time but could follow up to answer this question.

MLY: What is the estimated cost of the upgrade sitting at now?

JK: The costs will depend on the choices that are made in the next few meetings but will be funded by grants.

MLY: How did summer 2023 go at the pool?

JK: It was a great summer. We have had excellent feedback from poolgoers and staff. We are keeping our focus on staff retention and keeping up training for the younger swimmers who are interested in working at the pool in the future.

MLY: Anything you would like to add?

JK: I want to send a huge thank you to Krista Wilson who did a great job managing the pool and to all staff who made 2023 a great season. I am looking forward to seeing this project underway after many years of anticipation.
