B.C.’s police watchdog has cleared Mounties of any wrong-doing in connection with an officer-involved shooting at Louis Creek in the spring of 2022.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC said it has concluded an investigation into the incident where one man sustained an injury.
At about 9 p.m. on May 20, 2022, police responded to a call reporting there was a man with a weapon in the 3400-block of Highway 5. When officers arrived, there was an interaction and shots were fired by police, noted the IIO in a news release issued Oct. 24.
The man sustained a gunshot-related injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“On behalf of the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s General Counsel has reviewed the evidence – including forensic scene analysis, video footage, medical records, and police information – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence,” stated the IIO.
Due to a concurrent police investigation related to the incident, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO website until that process has concluded.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
