On Canada Day, Canadian ultra athlete Shanda Hill of Vernon shattered her own world record.
Hill, 42, finished the Bretzel Ultra Deca Triathlon race in Colmar, France, Tuesday, July 1, in 225 hours, 10 minutes and 25 seconds, crushing her previous record from Brazil of 239:14.22, more than 14 hours faster than her last Deca.
Hill was first among the women in the field of 15, and second overall. She was less than three hours behind the top man, Goulwenn Tristant of France.
Hill swam 38 kilometres, biked 1,800 kms, and ran 422 km, doing so with a severe laceration to her ankle that cut to the bone, requiring stitches, suffered on the bike portion of the race. She persevered through pain, heat, and exhaustion.
There will be little rest for the weary Hill as she will remain in Europe to compete in another Deca race in Poland in less than two weeks.
