Local youth participate in annual cadet review

The cadets of 581 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron faced this year’s Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) on June 14 at the West Kootenay Regional Airport.

The new venue offered a great way for the cadets to showcase the skills they learned during the year in front of family, friends, cadet leadership and community dignitaries.

The ACR also included a ceremonial inspection by airport manager Maciej Habrych.

Habrych said he was impressed with the discipline exhibited by the cadets.

Several cadets were presented with recognitions of their accomplishments:

The Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence – Flight Sgt. Golson Menard
Top Rookie Cadet – LAC Stefania Idrogo
Most Proficient Junior – Flight Cpl. Tayeop Kim
Most Proficient Senior – Sgt. Taejun Oh
Most Improved – Flight Cpl. Kaitlyn Cox

The Castlegar squadron is now over 70 years old. It has been led by Lt. Llora McTeer since 2020. There were 30 cadets for the 2024/2025 program.

"I have the pleasure of working with all of these youth every week," said McTeer.

"I think anyone that has the opportunity to see what these cadets learn and what they accomplish during their time in this program can attest to how amazing this program truly is. It gives incredible opportunities to the youth of our communities. It sets up new leaders and new employment opportunities for these youth."

The Air Cadet program is free and open to youth between the ages of 12 and 18. Applications can be found at cadets.gc.ca.
